The Young Guns of Shaping

“We are extremely excited to be a part of the Young Guns of Shaping competition. Young talent is the future of our craft and the future of our sport,” said Christopher Clark, VP of Marketing at SIMR Surfboards. “All four of these young shapers will have to face an obstacle that is next to impossible. Even the most experienced shaper would find our event extremely challenging and that is the idea.”

Purpose: SIMR Surfboards has a strong interest in cultivating the next generation of surfboard shapers. The main goal is to provide young shapers with a platform that encourages a focus on creativity and custom surfboard design.

Event Overview: We have selected 4 shapers who are age 25 and under. Each shaper is given two hours to shape a surfboard out of a massive chunk of foam. The shapers can shape anything they want and must use their own tools. The finished blanks will then be judged Saturday afternoon by legendary San Diego shaper Rusty Preisendorfer. The Young Guns of Shaping are: DJ Kane, Gary Strahle, Ryan Burch, and Tyler Warren.

Prize: (1) SIMR Surfboards will award the “Young Gun Shaper of the Year” with a $500 check at Sacred Craft on August 14, 2010. (2) SIMR Surfboards will be offering the winning shaper the opportunity to feature their winning surfboard design in the SIMR Surfboard Catalog 2011. (3) The winning surfboard design will be featured in the 2011 Surfer Magazine Board Buyer’s Guide. (4) The winning shaper will also be offered an invitation to join the growing SIMR Shaper’s Collective.
